Alec Wildenstein’s divorce from Jocelyn Wildenstein – $2.5 billion
Late French billionaire art dealer and businessman Alec Wildenstein reached the very top of our list with an out-of-this-world divorce figure of $2.5 billion. The hefty sum went to his former wife Jocelyn Wildenstein. In 2001, Alec inherited his family’s $10 billion art-dealing business, which includes one of the world’s biggest art collections, so although the figure didn’t take the greater portion of his wealth, it still stands out as an absolute record of the pricey divorces domain.

Bernie Ecclestone’s divorce from Slavica Ecclestone – $1.2 billion
Formula One president Bernie Ecclestone and his former wife Slavica are a bit of an odd couple – not only is Bernie 28 years older than his former spouse, but he’s also 11.5 inches (29 cm) shorter. Anyhow, the two divorced in 2009 after a 24-year marriage, costing Bernie almost a third of his fortune – a whopping $1.2 billion. Adnan Khashoggi’s divorce from Soraya Khashoggi – $850 million
Cracking the big 3 comes Adnan Khashoggi, a renowned businessman from Saudi Arabia. His divorce from Soraya Khashoggi cost him $850 million; funnily enough, he likely just brushed off the settlement bill, as his value was estimated at astonishing $40 billion back in the early ’80s. That’s well over $90 billion when adjusted to modern inflation.

Craig McCaw’s divorce from Wendy McCaw – $460 million
Cellphone industry pioneer Craig McCaw reached the billionaire plateau through clever business and entrepreneurial investments, as well as his company McCaw Cellular, currently a part of AT&T Mobility. His 1997 divorce from Wendy McCaw on the other hand brought him just under the $500 million mark in terms of expenses. Although it wasn’t enough to push him into the Top 3, it did cost Craig around a quarter of his fortune.

Mel Gibson’s divorce from Robyn Moore Gibson – $425 million
Film magnate Mel Gibson brings us a step closer to $500 million with his 2011 divorce from Robyn Moore Gibson. The pair decided to go separate ways after 21 years in marriage, costing Mel a solid portion of his fortune – a grand figure of $425 million to be precise.

Roman Abramovich’s divorce from Irina Abramovich – $300 million
Russian business tycoon Roman Abramovich takes the divorce sums to a new level and crosses the $300 million mark with his separation from second wife Irina Vyacheslavovna Malandina. After 16 years of marriage and five children, the two ended their relationship in 2007, costing Roman a whopping $300 million. Seeing that the Chelsea FC owner is valued at almost $15 billion, he likely handled the financial impact with ease.

Michael Jordan’s divorce from Juanita Jordan – $168 million
Basketball legend Michael Jordan lands at No. 7 spot of our list with 2006 divorce from his wife Juanita. The two married in 1989 and initially filed for a divorce in 2002, but managed to reconcile their differences.
It didn’t last long though, as they repeated their actions four years later, ultimately ending their marriage in late 2006. The divorce was described as a mutual decision and cost MJ $168 million, making it at the time the most expensive divorce ever.

Boris Berezovsky’s divorce from Galina Besharova – $160 million
Russian business magnate Boris Berezovsky ended his marriage with Galina Besharova in 2010, costing him a major sum of $160 million. Berezovsky was a billionaire to begin with, so the given amount likely didn’t cause him too much financial damage.
As a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a government official and mathematician, he was a well-respected member of the community. Unfortunately, Berezovsky decided to abruptly end his life in March 2013, committing a suicide by hanging in his Titness Park home in the UK.

Neil Diamond’s divorce from Marcia Murphey – $150 million
Following a 25-year marriage with Maricia Murphey, the iconic singer Neil Young was relieved of $150 million. The couple settled their divorce in mid-’90, with the precise date still remaining unknown. They had two sons during their marriage – Jesse and Micah.

Frank McCourt’s divorce from Jamie McCourt – $130 million
When former owner/chairman of LA Dodgers and Dodger Stadium, Frank McCourt divorced his wife Jamie in 2009, it cost him a hefty sum of $130 million. Prior to the divorce, Jamie was handling the position of Dodgers CEO, but was fired in October 2009, soon after the divorce proceedings commenced.
The final settlement was reached in 2011, leaving Frank’s former wife with what is believed to be the most expensive divorce in California history. Interestingly enough, Frank sold the Dodgers next year for a whopping $2 billion figure.
