From Monuments to Ministries: Finding Fulfillment in Humility

Building monuments to ourselves and serving our own pride and desires won't end well, because anything built only for self is built on sand.

When we live to impress, to be praised, to be remembered for our own greatness, we exhaust ourselves chasing something that can never satisfy. Pride promises fulfillment but delivers emptiness. It isolates us from others, it makes us compete instead of love, and it quietly places us on a throne that was never meant for us. Like the Tower of Babel, monuments to the self look impressive for a moment, but they cannot stand.

But there is another way, a better way, the way of Jesus described in Philippians 2:3-8:

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross."

God does not call us to build higher for ourselves, but to bow lower in love for Him and for others. As we humbly serve God and love Him well, we stop striving to prove our worth because we finally realize we are already fully known and fully loved.

True meaning is not found in being celebrated, but in being close to Him. True fulfillment is not found in accumulating attention, but in abiding in His presence, where pride fades and peace remains. When Christ is the monument at the center of our lives, not ourselves, our lives become something lasting, something that points beyond us to His glory.

Anchored: Held Fast When the Waves Crash

Some may anchor in unreliable things — their own ambition, unhealthy friendships, or negative habits that feel comforting in the moment. Ambition can shift when failure comes. Friends can drift when life gets hard. Habits can promise relief but leave us more empty than before.

How much better to anchor in the One whom we know we can trust and depend on.

When the waves crash around us — when anxiety rises, when loss comes without warning, when the future feels uncertain — we will be held fast. Not because we are strong enough to hold on, but because He is strong enough to hold us.

Our soul is anchored in God. This is what Scripture calls a sure and steadfast anchor for the soul, one that reaches beyond what we can see.

Today, God is still the anchor for our soul, and we can trust Him. He does not move with our moods or change with our circumstances. He does not let go when we doubt or when we are tired.

To be anchored in Him means we can be tossed but not lost, shaken but not shipwrecked. The storm may still be real, but it no longer has the final word over us.

When You Have Nothing Left, God Will Lift You Up

God is in the rescue business.

He knows when you are at your wits’ end, when you have reached the place where your own strength is no longer enough. 

He recognizes when your heart is sore from disappointment, loss, or pain, and He understands the burdens you carry even when you cannot find the words to explain them. 

He sees when your soul is thirsty for peace, comfort, direction, and hope. Nothing about your struggle is hidden from Him, and no tear falls unnoticed in His presence. 

He sees the way ahead, even when all you can see is uncertainty, darkness, or a closed door. When you do not know which way to turn, God already knows the path He is preparing for you. 

He bends His ear to listen when you cry out to Him, whether your prayer is spoken with confidence or whispered through tears. He does not despise a broken heart or a weary soul; instead, He draws near to those who call upon Him. 

In His perfect timing, He reaches down to lift you from the places where you feel trapped, forgotten, or unable to continue. Sometimes His rescue comes by changing the circumstances around us, and sometimes it comes by giving us the strength to walk through them. 

Even when the answer does not come as quickly as we hoped, we can trust that God has not abandoned us. His hands are strong enough to hold us, His wisdom is great enough to guide us, and His love is faithful enough to carry us through. 

So when you feel that you have nothing left, do not give up—lift your eyes toward God and call upon His name. The One who sees you, hears you, and knows you completely is still at work, and He is able to make a way where you cannot yet see one.

When I Thought I Was Alone

Story Time ❤️

When I was a student at UST, I still remember this one rainy night after a theater rehearsal. We finished super late and, since we were inside the auditorium, we didn’t even realize how hard it was raining outside.

The moment we stepped out, we saw that the flood around campus was already knee-deep. 😭

My friends were all heading home in different directions, so eventually, I was left to walk home alone.

There I was, walking through the dark, flooded streets of Dapitan in my school uniform, carrying my backpack and umbrella. It was raining so hard, and honestly, I was scared.

So I just kept praying and talking to Jesus as I walked, like He was right there beside me. I kept asking Him to protect me and keep me safe until I could get out of the flooded area.

Eventually, I reached a part where the water had gone down, so I took a pedicab.

And that’s when the driver told me something I’ll never forget.

He said he had seen me from a distance and actually wanted to pick me up, but he hesitated because he thought I was walking with a man.

I just smiled.

Because I knew exactly who that “man” was. ❤️

Looking back, I realize now that I was never really alone that night.

Jesus was with me—listening to every prayer, walking beside me, protecting me, and guiding me safely home.

And every time I remember that night, I still get emotional. 🥹❤️

It reminds me just how faithful God has been in my life. Even in the moments when I thought I was alone, He was right there with me.

Sometimes, we don’t realize how God is protecting us until we look back and see the little signs He left along the way.

God is faithful. Always. ❤️

Kindness Costs Nothing, But Means Everything

It feels like I somehow absorbed my client’s sadness today.

Just sharing.

There was a client at the bank earlier. There were still quite a lot of people despite the rain. He went straight to my coworker. He said he had an auto loan, but he only handed over his passbook, so my coworker was clueless about what transaction he needed.

She asked him:

Coworker: “Sir, what would you like to do? Are you going to make a payment or a deposit?” while pointing at the passbook

Client: “I only know that I have an auto loan, ma’am. I don’t know how to do it. Maybe you could teach me? I really have no idea what my wife used to do before.”

Coworker: “Maybe it’s enrolled in auto-debit, sir? If it’s on auto-debit, you just need to deposit funds into the account.”

Client: “The thing is, ma’am, our payments are already delayed. It’s been two months. I wasn’t able to take care of it right away because my wife passed away. I don’t know what I should deal with first.”

My coworker couldn’t answer right away because we don’t have access to the loan department, and I think she also didn’t know how to react. I was in the middle of processing something at the time, and I wasn’t even finished yet, but I told her I would handle it instead.

When he handed me his passbook, I checked the name. It was somewhat familiar because someone had been making deposits into that account every month. I figured that person was probably his wife.

He repeated his story to me, so I told him, “It’s okay, sir. Just stay calm. I’ll check it for you.”

He kept apologizing. Aside from there being a lot of people, he genuinely didn’t know what to do. So I reassured him that it was okay and that we would help him through the process.

I explained everything he needed to do—how much he needed to pay in total, when he needed to make the payments, and when he needed to fund his account since it was enrolled in auto-debit.

When everything was done, that was when I finally said, “My condolences, sir. Please stay strong.”

That was when he became a little teary-eyed.

He said losing his wife was so difficult. He didn’t know how to start over or how to move forward, especially because it happened so suddenly. His wife was only 47 years old. She had a heart attack.

I didn’t know what to say, so I just silently prayed for him and for his wife.

Before he left, he asked for my name and told me that, somehow, he felt a little lighter after our conversation. At least one less thing was weighing on his mind.

The client who came after him told me that I was very kind and patient with the previous client.

I just told him, “Being kind is free, sir. It doesn’t cost anything.” :)))

Maybe sometimes, that’s all we can give someone—and sometimes, that little kindness might be what helps save us on days when the weight we’re carrying feels unbearably heavy.

So today, I’m also reminding myself:

Being kind is free.

We never really know what someone else is going through. Some people may be carrying grief, fear, confusion, or pain that we cannot see.

So, whenever we can, be kind.

A little patience, a little understanding, or simply treating someone gently may mean much more to them than we will ever know. :)))
