🦗 Can Cicadas Really Make You Lose Your Hearing? A Recent Case Says: Don’t Underestimate the Buzz

Cicadas are one of the unmistakable sounds of summer—a familiar chorus coming from trees, parks, and forests.

But could spending hours surrounded by that sound actually affect your hearing?

A recent case reported in China has caught widespread attention after an 18-year-old student reportedly developed temporary hearing problems following several hours of exposure to a dense cicada chorus.

🦗 Four Hours Under a “Natural Sound”

According to reports, the student, from Ningbo in Zhejiang province, went camping in a dense forest in early July 2026.

Around noon, the cicadas became extremely loud.

He remained in the area for approximately four hours without hearing protection.

By evening, he noticed something was wrong.

His ears felt full, he experienced tinnitus—or ringing in the ears—and had difficulty hearing high-frequency sounds. Sounds such as birdsong and phone notifications reportedly became harder for him to hear.

Doctors diagnosed him with temporary noise-related hearing impairment. After treatment and about two weeks of avoiding loud noise, his hearing reportedly returned to normal.

The story attracted widespread attention online because it challenged a common assumption:

If a sound comes from nature, it must be harmless.

Not necessarily.

🔊 It’s Not Just About How Loud—It’s How Long

Our ears don't respond to sound based on volume alone.

Intensity + duration + repetition all matter.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) uses 85 dBA over eight hours as its recommended occupational exposure limit. With its 3-dB exchange rate, the recommended exposure time is cut in half for every additional 3 dB:

  • 85 dBA — 8 hours
  • 88 dBA — 4 hours
  • 91 dBA — 2 hours
  • 94 dBA — 1 hour
  • 97 dBA — 30 minutes
  • 100 dBA — 15 minutes

These are occupational guidelines—not a claim that everyone exposed to a particular sound for exactly that amount of time will suffer hearing damage. But they demonstrate an important principle: the louder the sound, the less exposure time is needed to reach a potentially hazardous dose.

And there is another important factor:

📍 Distance matters.

Standing close to a large concentration of singing cicadas can produce a very different exposure from hearing the same chorus from across a field.

NIOSH has specifically addressed cicada noise and points out that the sound level alone does not determine hearing risk. Exposure duration and repeated exposure also have to be considered.

👂 What Happens When Your Ears Have Had Too Much?

After loud-noise exposure, some people can experience temporary symptoms such as:

• Ringing or buzzing in the ears
• A feeling of fullness or pressure
• Sounds seeming muffled
• Difficulty hearing certain frequencies

These symptoms can represent a temporary threshold shift, meaning hearing sensitivity temporarily changes after loud sound exposure.

Importantly, temporary symptoms do not automatically mean permanent hearing loss.

However, repeated exposure to sufficiently loud noise can contribute to permanent noise-induced hearing loss. NIOSH describes repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA as hazardous in occupational settings and emphasizes that noise-induced hearing loss is preventable.

🌳 So, Should You Be Afraid of Cicadas?

No.

You don't need to avoid forests because cicadas are singing.

The important lesson isn't that “cicadas are dangerous.”

It's that natural doesn't automatically mean risk-free.

A short walk beneath a tree filled with cicadas is very different from spending several hours extremely close to a very loud chorus.

If the sound is so loud that you need to raise your voice to talk to someone nearby, that's a useful warning sign that you're experiencing a high noise environment. NIOSH uses this practical indicator when discussing potentially hazardous noise.

If you're spending a long time around unusually loud cicadas, simply move farther away, take quiet breaks, or use hearing protection.

🦗 The Bigger Lesson

The cicada may be tiny.

The sound doesn't always feel dangerous.

And because it's part of nature, we may never think twice about it.

But our ears don't care whether the sound comes from a concert speaker, a machine—or hundreds of insects in a tree.

Your ears respond to sound intensity and exposure.

The recent Chinese case is therefore a fascinating reminder:

Nature can be beautiful, but even beautiful sounds deserve a little respect.

So the next time the summer trees suddenly erupt into a deafening “BUZZZZZZZZ…”, enjoy the sound—but maybe don't stand directly underneath the loudest tree for four hours. 🦗👂
