What was supposed to be a fun drink turned into a tragedy in Misamis Oriental on October 2, 2022.
A drinking group agreed to a "laklak challenge" in exchange for an instant prize of PHP20,000. There were six of them who joined in the game of quickly consuming a long neck—750 ml. of alcohol for 20 seconds.
Richie Elleso Dumaloan, 29, won and beat five drinkers. When the liquor was gone, Richie shouted "This is for Papa!" or for his father because he is sick and needs treatment.
But seconds after winning, Richie collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital. The next day, October 3, he lost his life. Police Major Renz Serrano, officer-in-charge of Villanueva, Misamis Oriental Police Station said in the One PH report, "He was the first to finish and he was the only one who finished."
According to Serrano, Dumaloan joined the challenge to help treat his sick father. But just a few moments after the laklak challenge, Richie fell down and experienced lock-jaw so his colleagues rushed him to the hospital. He passed away the next day, October 3, Monday. The investigation of the Philippine National Police continues to determine the cause of death of the victim. But Mary Jane Fernandez, Richie's live-in partner, said the victim had a history of heart attack. According to a report by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Richie and Mary Jane plan to get married this coming December. They have three children.
The expert explained, drinking too much alcohol can lead to comatose or death, reports One PH. Said Dr. Bernard Balatbat, clinical nutrition specialist/ pediatrician: "It could have happened because he drank too fast, the alcohol went to his lungs, it could be that... "Or it could also be because of too much, your liver can't catch up to clear the alcohol, that's why, you suddenly collapse, your brain can't recover." This is said to be the reason why when drinking alcohol, you should drink slowly and moderately.
