Nkwichi Lake Malawi, Mozambique, Africa

Nkwichi is located on Lake Malawi whose shores offer a total of eight secluded beaches on which to frolic with your loved one. Forgo your jungle-palace lodgings for one night and sleep in the open-air ‘Star Bed’ (pictured) – either on a virgin beach or set on a private rock – from where you can gaze at the African night’s sky.

Hotel Sezz, Paris, France

Of course Paris should feature on the list of sexiest hotel suites. This charming mini-hotel is in the romantic 16th arrondissement. The tone is low-key, provincial and chic – the palette of Slate, blue-grey and red is so Parisian – and there are gorgeous views of the Eiffel Tower over the city’s jumbled rooftops. There’s even a personal assistant on hand day and night. To run out for flowers, chocolates and presents, surely.

Ponta Dos Ganchos, Santa Catarina, Brazil

This secluded paradise in Southern Brazil is a popular honeymoon spot. The freestanding suites facilitate privacy – each has an infinity pool, beautiful day beds and a large, freestanding bathtub with views over the ocean. And if that wasn’t enough – there’s also a hot tub.

Hotel Escondido, Mexico

One for the free spirits, Hotel Escondido on Mexico’s relatively undiscovered (and fittingly named) Puerto Escondido (‘hidden coast’) is chilled through and through. Relax by taking a dip in your private plunge pool (pictured) after a day of hardcore surfing.

Jamaica’s Rockhouse Hotel, Negril, Jamaica

An infinity pool, private sunbathing decks, and a massage cabana on a cliff side means that Jamaica’s Rock House rates highly in the romance stakes. The hexagonal bungalows, which are set into the westernmost tip of Jamaica over the deep Caribbean waters, make for a great sunset-watching spot. Very Robinson Crusoe-chic.

Blakes Hotel, London, UK

The Corfu Suite at Blakes Hotel was voted 'Sexiest Bedroom' in the world at the first Smith Hotel Awards last year, so it really is a deserving winner. Anouska Hempel is the designer behind this exotic den which references Russia, India and Turkey. The billowing four-poster bed means it’s a popular option among newlyweds.

PalazzinaG, Venice, Italy

Venice is another likely Valentine’s spot for the loved-up. The PalazzinaG has perhaps the sexiest suites in the whole city – neutral tones of cream and gold, masked lamps, mirrors a-plenty and – most importantly – views of the canal from the bed. Plus, all the rooms are tailor-made so it really is a unique V-day experience.

Homeric Poems, Santorini, Greece

Santorini doesn’t have to try very hard to be romantic, given the assets it was blessed with: white buildings overlooking the azure sea, backed by the brilliantly clear sky – but Homeric Poems does one better. Book into the Grand Suite and expect a Moroccan-style Jacuzzi (complete with sea views and an optical fibre ceiling), private pool and gorgeous balcony with a circular bed on which you can enjoy the golden sunsets for which the island is famous.

Hotel Pulitzer, Buenos Aires, Argentina

If, to you, sexy means smart and well-turned out, then Buenos Aires’ Hotel Pulitzer is perfect. This is for city slickers – the clean lines, which hark back to the deco heritage of Argentina’s Golden Age, are complemented with fashionable tones and design-forward furniture. The black marble bathrooms are a lesson in sophistication. Join the bronzed bodies up on the eighth-floor roof terrace for cocktails at sunset.

La Residence, South Africa

Minimalism is not something that South Africa’s La Residence is familiar with – loaded with Persian rugs, antiques, fine art and beautiful bric-a-bric, this is a Versailles in miniature (the bathrooms are particularly special). This palatial-like hotel overlooks the valleys of vines in Franschhoek, so expect good wine too.

Niyama, Maldives

The Maldives is a classic choice for newlyweds, and the Niyama resort is no exception. The studios are more akin to floating houses than suites. Each comes with a private pool, open-air bathroom and large decks with steps down to the warm Indian Ocean.

Oxygen Jungle Villas, Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s luxury hotel offerings have been on the up recently. Discerning travellers looking for some secluded-style rainforest romance should check into Oxygen Jungle Villas. The Balinese – not Costa Rican – style villas are less thatched shack and more glass jungle boltholes: think glass walls, flowing white curtains and glossy marble floors.

Phulay Bay, Krabi, Thailand

‘Temples of indulgence’ are how the Phulay Bay in Krabi describe their grand villas – and that they certainly are. The beds mean business here: they measure up at a huge 4 metres wide. Everything else exudes sensuality and opulence – outdoor bathing spaces, plunge pools and Lanna Art.

Predi Son Jaumell, Mallorca

The Predi Son Jaumell Hotel is rural Mallorca at its finest. The rich orange of the farmhouse is echoed throughout the otherwise whitewashed rooms of the property – it feels clean, chic and local. This is one for the foodie couples – the chef here is ex-El Bulli.

Song Saa Private Island, Cambodia

Any hotel with ‘Private Island’ in its name is a precursor to what ensues. Located on the Koh Rong Islands is this little patch of paradise – thatched and stone villas complete with private decks and swimming pools. Leave the bedroom doors open so the sea breeze gently lulls you to sleep. It might just feel like your very own private island.

Tsala Treetop Lodge, South Africa

South Africa’s Tsala Treetop Lodge would be the honeymoon spot for Tarzan and Jane. As promised in the name, the huts are built into the treetops high above the surrounding green canopy. The highlight of the Tsala Suite has to be the infinity pool – swimming among the trees is a novel experience – as well as the sumptuous bath.
