National flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) has been voted the world’s 90th top airline by passengers in the 2013 Skytrax World Airline Awards.
PAL is the only local airline in this year’s Top 100 list, which was decided by over 18 million passengers in 160 countries worldwide in an online survey conducted from July 2012 to May 2013.
The respondents judged 200 airlines based on the following criteria: check-in, boarding, onboard seat comfort, cabin cleanliness, food, beverages, in-flight entertainment and staff service.
Topping this year’s awards is Dubai-based Emirates, which ranked eighth last year, followed by 2012 winner Qatar Airlines.
Singapore Airlines ranked third, followed by ANA All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Etihad Airways, Garuda Indonesia and Turkish Airlines. Qantas Airways rounded out the Top 10.
“These awards are widely regarded as the industry’s benchmark for excellence. For us, the awards clearly reflect a vote of confidence from global travelers, who acknowledge and appreciate our continuous drive to deliver high-quality service. To be voted ‘World’s Best Airline’ by millions of discerning travelers really is something for our 60,000 strong workforce to be proud of,” Tim Clark, president of Emirates, said in a statement published on the World Airline Awards website.
Edward Plaisted of Skytrax, for his part, said: “We operate these awards on a not-for-profit basis, and apply rigorous monitoring to the survey process, guaranteeing that there is no outside influence or airline involvement. The reputation of these awards relies on our ability to maintain transparency across the survey and awards format.”
“We know that some award-winning airlines are not the favorite of everyone, and we receive vocal feedback and complaints from a few users each year when results are published. However, we can do no more than remind them that award-winning airlines are decided by their fellow airline customers, and not by Skytrax,” Plaisted added.
The World Airline Awards has been held since 1999.
