Award-winning filmmaker Brillante Mendoza will be inducted into the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France, which boasts as members the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Sean Connery, Bob Dylan and Clint Eastwood.

The Filipino director, whose films have been shown in France's prestigious Cannes Film Festival, will be recognized as Chevalier (knight) in the country's Order of Arts and Letters.

Established in 1957 by the French Ministry of Culture, the order gives recognition to individuals who has had "significant contribution to the enrichment of the French cultural inheritance."

Mendoza's recognition, which may be conferred on up to 200 individuals a year, comes with a medallion to be given at a yet to be scheduled ceremony in France.

Other grades in the order are Commandeur (commander) and Officier (officer).

Before Mendoza, another Filipino has already been recognized as member by the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Historian Ambeth Ocampo, who is known for his works on national hero Jose Rizal, was ranked officer in the order in 2008.

The membership in the prestigious French order is the latest recognition to honor the works of Mendoza, who has earned international acclaim for films such as "Serbis," "Kinatay," "Captive," and most recently, "Thy Womb."
